How to Blog as a Business for Profit
You probably think you don’t need a blog. I was the same way. The problem was I didn’t understand how to blog as a business for profit.
I thought blogging was for indie-hippie types writing about artsy-fartsy crap and stay at home moms blogging about cupcakes and makeup tips.
You can see why I thought blogging wasn’t for me. But, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I needed this business.
Yes, a blog is a business.
– or at least it should be.
If you view you blog as a viable part of your business, then blogging takes on an entirely new meaning.
Treating your blog like a business separates it from the hordes of hobby blogs that achieve nothing. Your blog moves into the category of money making business.
Sounds good, right?
Hold on, not so fast. Blogging for money takes time. You won’t be casing any checks anytime soon.
You’ll probably make zero money for the first 6-18 months. Yes, up to a year and a half of work without getting paid for it.
So, why would anybody do this?
Because the rewards on the other side of the initial growth phase FAR OUTWEIGH the cost.
The simple fact is…
…If you have finally had enough of your current situation, and are ready to TAKE SOME ACTION then starting a blog is the best first thing you can do.
But before getting into the “how to” let’s talk about some of the reasons YOU should start blogging as a business immediately.
Entrepreneurs use Blogs as Marketing Tools
As a new entrepreneur you might be wondering where you’re going to get your customers from. To be truthful, you might not have even though about customers at all.
Ha, it’s a rookie mistake. Don’t sweat it.
What are customers you ask? Those are the people who are going to stuff your pockets with cash.
But first you have to find them. Or, better yet, let them come and find you.
And one of the best ways to do that is to have a blog sitting there waiting for them.
Trust me, if you just start producing content instead of consuming content they will come. Over time you’ll begin to rank for some of your topics and eventually the traffic to your site will ramp up.
And, voila, now you have customers seeking YOU out.
And all you need to do is continue producing content, creating products, and making recommendations.
We’ll talk about those last two things in other blog posts.
Right now let’s talk about some other reasons you should start blogging for money right now.
REASONS FOR BLOGGING AS A BUSINESS
- YOU GET TAPPED IN TO THE BIGGEST MARKETPLACE IN THE WORLD – THE INTERNET
- IT’S EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING
- YOU CAN CREATE A LOYAL FOLLOWING – BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FUTURE CUSTOMERS
- YOU GROW YOUR CUSTOMER LIST
- YOU HELP PEOPLE IN YOUR NICHE SOLVE PROBLEMS
- IT’S FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE TO GET STARTED
- YOU GET FEEDBACK FROM YOUR READERS
- YOUR READERSHIP CAN LEAD YOU IN DIRECTIONS YOU WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT OF YOURSELF
- IT BUILDS YOUR STATUS AS AN EXPERT
- BLOGGING TEACHES YOU TO VALUE SLOW GROWTH, CONSISTENT ACTION, AND MAKING SMALL GAINS
- ARTICLES YOU PUBLISH TODAY WILL BE WORKING FOR YOU FOR MANY, MANY YEARS
- YOU DECIDE WHEN YOU WANT TO WORK – FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE
- YOU ARE YOUR OWN BOSS
As you can see, the benefits of having a business based blog outweigh the initial startup cost exponentially.
So then, why don’t you have a blog yet?
REASONS PEOPLE DO NOT START A BLOG
You might be thinking that this isn’t for you. It’s pretty common to have some doubts when you first become interested in something new.
The little voice in your head is saying “you can’t do this”, “don’t try it”, “it’s a scam”, or some other such nonsense. It’s only natural and it’s no big deal.
Tell that voice to shut up.
It’s spewing garbage. It’s spreading limiting beliefs. It doesn’t know what it’s talking about.
You are in charge now. It’s your turn to take command. You make the decisions now.
We’re going to destroy some of your false beliefs right now.
Some of the reasons that you might be feeling doubt are:
- YOU THINK YOU HAVE NOTHING WORTH SAYING
This is a bold faced lie. Everybody has something to say. Everybody has a unique view of things. Everybody can teach somebody something. EVERYBODY!
- YOU ARE AFRAID TO OFFEND SOMEBODY
I’m not going to lie to you. You will offend somebody. You will attract the haters, the Negative Nancys, the Debbie Downers.
Who cares. Delete them. Block them. Move on.
It’s your business and only you decide who stays and who goes.
- YOU THINK WRITING IS TOO DIFFICULT
Just start writing. Writing promotes more writing.
You get better every day.
Eventually, you will be able to sit down at the keyboard and pound out a 1500-word article as effortlessly as taking your next breath. It becomes part of you.
The writing will come, with practice, patience, and persistence. Don’t’ even think about it, just write.
Writing will enrich your life in many ways other than being a vehicle for attracting customers and producing income.
On a personal development level, writing will help you to cultivate ideas.
Writing helps you bring your thoughts into laser like focus.
Writing can help to exercise unhelpful emotions from your mind.
And putting ideas into words helps to declutter the mind and free up “disk space” for new ideas to germinate.
Trust me, the more you write the more you’ll find to write about.
It’s a self-feeding process.
Besides, I’ll show you ways to make your writing much faster and easier than you ever imagined.
Remember, you are a business owner now, not an employee.
But, that lesson is for another post.
The final reason people don’t blog as a business is:
- ITS TOO HARD TO SET UP – I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT
Here’s How to Setup a WordPress Blog
Step 1: Select a name for your blog
For people to remember your blog, you should find a good name for it. Its name will be included in the blog’s header so that people will see it when they arrive at your website. It should be easy to remember and it should talk about the niche you’ve decided to be a part of.
Aside from being your blog’s title, the name of your blog will also be included in your domain name. The domain name is the group of words that people type on the URL box when they want to go to your blog.
Pick a name that sounds cool or exciting and describes what your blog is about.
BlueCollarEscape.com sounds cool and describes what the blog is about. MikeForgeBlog.com does not sound cool and describes nothing.
You need to consider many factors when choosing a domain name. The name should have the following characteristics:
- It should be as short as possible
- All the words should be spelled correctly
- It should be easy to transform into a brand name
Today, it’s difficult to find a domain name that you want. Most of the good names are taken. The available ones are sold expensively.
With a little creativity and imagination, you’ll find something that sounds cool and brands easily.

Step 2: Choose the best home for your blog
Now that you are sure that the domain name that you want is available, you should find a place where to host your blog. There are two ways to start a blog, using a free platform and paying for hosting.
Using a free platform is dumb for business.
For one thing you don’t own any of the content you put in your blog This means that the managers of the platform can delete or modify your content if they see fit.
Aren’t we building a business to get away from these types of things…?
If you want complete freedom when starting your blog, you should go with a hosted platform.
In this method, you are going to rent server space where the data of your blog will be stored. Luckily, there are hosting packages that are affordable even for people who are just starting out.
BlueHost, for instance, has a WordPress hosting plan that will only cost you $7.99 per month. This plan also includes a free domain name so you don’t have to pay for the first year of your domain.
Most importantly, the plan includes a 1-click install of WordPress.
Step 3: Install WordPress
After going through the BlueHost payment system, you will be sent an email regarding the details of your hosting package. You will need three details about your blog to get started, C-Panel address, C-Panel login and password.
These details should be included in your welcome emails from BlueHost. If your C-Panel is already available, you should go to the C-Panel address provided by BlueHost. In there, you will be asked to enter the username and password. You should do as instructed to start building your blog.
After logging in, you should look for the MOJO Marketplace options to start your installation. You should see a One-click Installs icon. From the options, you should choose ‘WordPress’ to initiate the installation process.
You should provide the domain name where you will install the blogging software. You don’t need to add a specific directory if you want your blog to appear in your home page. After that, you should click install.
After clicking the install button, you will be asked to give the following information:
- Site Name (You can change this later on)
- Admin Username (Used to log in to your dashboard)
You should also keep the two boxes at the bottom checked. One is to create a database for the software and the other is to state that you agree with the terms and conditions for its use. Lastly, you should click the “Install Now” button.

Step 4: Design your blog
After installing WordPress to your blog, you can now log into your dashboard by going to this URL:
Make sure to bookmark this page in your browser.
In that page, you will have fields where you will enter the username and password you used in the installation process.
You should now be in your dashboard. Before you start adding posts, you should first prepare your blog so that it is presentable to your visitors. You can do this by adding a theme to your blog.
The theme includes html and CSS files that control the overall appearance of your blog. You can see the current theme of your blog by clicking on the ‘Appearance’ in the left sidebar of your blog. A dropdown menu should appear that includes the ‘themes’ option. After clicking on it, you will be able to see the themes installed in your blog.
You can add more themes by looking for them online. You will find hundreds of free themes in the software website.
However, free themes often have limitations in the features they offer.
They also don’t look that great and usually aren’t responsive. (they don’t respond well to being viewed through mobile devices)
Besides, if you want to look professional and be takes seriously as a business then pay for a good premium theme.
You should checkout out premium themes online. These themes will usually cost you between $0-50. This is usually just a one-time payment and it allows you to use the theme in multiple websites. Here is the process for installing such themes:
- Purchase the theme from the developer’s website
- Download theme to your computer
- Go to the theme page in your website.
- Press the ‘add new’ button, then the ‘upload theme’ button
Dashboard >> Themes >> Add New >> Upload Theme >>Choose File
- Browse for the theme files (in .zip format) and click on the Install Now button.
You should now be able to upload the files of the premium theme to your blog.
After installing your theme, your blog is now ready for your posts.
As soon as you have 10-15 posts, you should START PROMOTING YOUR BLOG.
Open social media accounts in the name of the blog or under your pen-name.
Begin sharing your posts. Make sure you reach out to likeminded blogs to build credibility and gain exposure to their following.
