What is the Rat Race?
The 9 to 5 grind, cube prison, same shit different day, daily grind, treadmill, hamster wheel, whatever name you call it by, the rat race SUCKS. If you’re caught in it, you have my condolences. To save your sanity and reclaim your life, you have to learn how to escape from the rat race.
You most likely feel frustrated. You might feel imprisoned, used, and/or degraded.
You probably don’t really like the people you work for/with. (Honestly, you REALLY DON’T like most of them, right?) You doubtlessly hate having to wake up at a particular time, rush to get ready, and be at your job at the appointed hour.
Do you like having large portions of your valuable time scheduled for you?
Do you enjoy adhering to office policy?
Do you like having to ask permission for a day off?
How about having to explain unscheduled absences? (Do I need to bring a note from my doctor?)
Face it. Working for somebody else is downright DEGRADING.
It’s an insult. It’s a kick in the crotch.
AND YOU KNOW IT!
How about the schedule? Let’s see, I have to wake up early, fight through traffic or crowded public transportation so I can be there on time. Then I can’t eat until you say it’s time. Then I have to wait until the preordained time so I can go do battle again with the other rats just to make it home in time for dinner and maybe some TV before bed.
All to earn just enough money to keep the bill collectors at bay until next payday, and maybe invest a bit toward my “retirement”.
If I do this for 5 days a week I am then rewarded with 2 days off.
And…if I do this for 30 or 40 years, and live frugally, and invest wisely, and the markets perform well, then, when I am 60+ years old, I can retire and “enjoy life”.
60+ YEARS OLD!
Maybe reading that will wake some of you up to the fact the rat race is a fantasy. It’s a mass con played out at the expense of the public for the benefit of the industry owners.
You are NOT a person in their eyes. You are HUMAN CAPITAL. You do NOT have the right to pursue happiness. YOUR streets are NOT paved with GOLD.
Your opportunities are limited and your ceiling is quite low compared to those who create their own future.
A few will rise to the top of this system and reap the benefits of being a favorite. But even for them, what they give in exchange (the majority of their life) is much more valuable than any perks they might receive.
Sadly, for most, the rat race is a slow, unfulfilling, soul-crushing descent into old age or early death.
So WHY would anybody do this?
And more importantly,
WHY ARE YOU COMPETING IN THE RAT RACE?
For most rat racers the simple answer to this question is that they were never taught how to create.
We live in a consumerist society. From very young ages we are bombarded with advertisements that convince us that we cannot live without product A or service B. Our lives will be so much better because now our product is “NEW AND IMPROVED”.
And, if you want to keep up with the Neighbors, you’ll just have to have buy, (insert overpriced, piece of shit product). Because, deep down inside, you KNOW that YOU SIMPLY AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH.
These are the lies that modern advertisements planted into our youthful psyches. No wonder so many people are reliant on therapy and medication just to deal with the problem of being human in the today’s world.
The business owners know this, and they use it to trap us into purchasing their unnecessary bullshit and luring us to their credit interest snare.
They profit from collecting interest on purchases and loans, as well as using us as human capital to do the heavy lifting in their businesses.
But, it’s not all that bad, is it?
In return, we are allowed to maybe have a car, home, cable TV, computer, and some other shit to distract us from the truth. It looks a lot like what society would deem as “responsibility”.
Get a car, buy a house, watch TV, get the internet, have some kids, send them to college, keep working to pay for it all, and in the end, when the best years of your life are gone, we’ll overcharge you for medication, medical procedures, and nursing home care.
You see, in the end they take back everything that they “allowed” you to have in the first place.
Except they got the most valuable asset of all from you. YOUR TIME.
And you’re never going to get any of that back, not one single second of it.
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE RAT RACE
We are CATTLE. Plain and simple. You are working for them and they profit on both ends of the deal.
Once you are trapped by too much debt, it’s nearly impossible to grow powerful enough to shatter the restraints of the 9 to 5 grind.
But most feel compelled to live this way.
The social pressure is enormous. The expectations to conform can suffocate even the most determined among us. And when the other crabs in the crab bucket realize that you’re trying to escape, they will nip and claw at you with all their might to keep you from leaving them behind.
The sad truth is, most rats running the race don’t even realize that they are trapped. They remain so distracted by utter bullshit, (celebrity gossip, sports, gambling, reality TV, fantasy novels, video games, pornography, etc.), that they happily go about their business, trading their valuable time for what amounts to a BIG FAT FILTHY LIE!
They are fools. They are doomed to a life of unfulfilling mediocrity and lower tier rewards. They will always be card-carrying members of the “have-nots”.
BUT YOU’RE DIFFERENT
If you routinely read blogs like this one, then you know that you are fundamentally different.
You may have always been this way, always knowing that you were bound to do amazing things. Or, it may be a more recent discovery you have made about yourself. Maybe you’ve reached that figurative “last straw” and have finally HAD ENOUGH!
You need an escape plan.
You want to know how to ignite your passion and break free.
But first let’s see what it’s like on the other side of blue collar freedom.
THE BENEFITS OF ESCAPING THE DAILY GRIND OF WAGE SLAVERY
The benefits to being the master of your own destiny are numerous and supremely better than those of even the top-tier of wage slaves.
Once you have attained even a moderate amount of success you will experience:
- Living life on YOUR terms
- Potential for nearly unlimited earnings
- The satisfaction that only self-sufficiency can deliver
- Turbo boosted confidence
- Freedom to travel and live anywhere in the world you like whenever you feel like it
- Taking time off whenever you feel like it
- The fulfilment of doing something you actually enjoy
And these are just some of the benefits of successful entrepreneurship.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a job that offers even SOME of these benefits. But, becoming the creator of your own destiny allows you to experience all of these and MORE.
OK, SO WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?
So, why haven’t you done it yet? Why are you still obediently answering the beck and call of your masters?
Here are some possible reasons:
9 to 5’ers are usually held back by one or more of the following afflictions:
CONDITIONING – As was touched on above, we are conditioned from a very young age to be consumers of goods, not creators. We are told to go to college, or get a job, marry, car, house, kids, etc. For the most part we blindly follow this doctrine without question because it’s all we know. Like Pavlov’s dogs, we have been conditioned for mediocrity and servitude. And most of us (happily) obey.
LAZINESS – Let’s face it, as tough as working for somebody else is, it’s not as hard as building something from scratch; or so it would seem. The idea that building alternative revenue sources is some herculean undertaking that only those descendant from the gods of Olympus should dare attempt keeps a lot of wannabes yoked to their blue collar drudgery. It’s much easier to work 5 days a week until you’re too old to enjoy life than to work a couple hours a day. Right?
The truth is that self made entrepreneurs are not that different from the average Joe. It’s the things they do and the way they think that separate them from the masses.
Would it be impossible for you to adopt these traits and mindset?
Think about it.
FEAR – The big scary world of the unknown. You’ll never know where your next paycheck is coming from. You’ll never know if what you’re working on will ever pay off. You can’t guarantee success. What if you don’t make a single dollar? What about health care? What about retirement?
These are all irrational fears that keep people from even trying. I’m not saying they aren’t real issues, but are you really going to wager the rest of your life on the idea that something might not work. That’s a high risk/low payoff risk. It’s not a bet I would take, and neither should you.
LACK OF KNOWLEDGE/WILLINGNESS TO LEARN – It’s not about what you know, it’s how you apply what you know. And if you don’t know enough, and trust me you don’t, then you’re going to have to learn. There are gates that safeguard each level of success and the rewards that reside there. A big part of the key to gaining access to these higher level rewards is knowledge and its application.
Never mind college education. You don’t need to be further indoctrinated into the consumer/slave mindset. If you don’t know how to do something, and you have internet access, then you have NO FUCKING EXCUSES. Look it up. Read some blog posts. Watch some videos. Take some online courses. Buy some books on the subject.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN EDUCATION.
You can learn how to do just about anything. Whether or not you apply it is completely up to you. That’s one of the biggest secrets of the successful, they actually learn how to do things, then do them!
MINDSET – This is probably the biggest impediment to blue-collar escape. Most rat racers simply have the wrong mindset. They are stuck in the consumerist, wasteful, spendthrift attitudes that they were indoctrinated into and see no alternative.
They are caught like animals in the La Brea Tar Pits. Except it isn’t sticky tar and noxious gas that traps them, it is their very own thoughts and beliefs.
Toxic, limiting beliefs keep them handcuffed to unfulfilling lives of drudgery and repetitive servitude. They eke out an existence and engage in their escapist hobbies.
They fit in because it’s what everybody else is doing.
In the end, when it’s too late, they realize that they’ve missed out on the truly important things.
They have misspent their most valuable asset, time, working for somebody else instead of building something of their own.
It is one of the cruelest and most demoralizing lessons anybody can learn.
YOU should consider yourself LUCKY THAT YOU ARE LEARNING THIS LESSON NOW.
So, what should your mindset be?
HOW TO ADOPT THE MINDSET OF A WINNER AND BEGIN CREATING YOUR OWN DESTINY
Winners have a fundamentally different view of the world than most average people. Adopting this way of thinking in exchange for your current mindset will assist you a lot in changing the outcome of your future.
- LONG TERM VIEWPOINT – Winners know where they want to be at various increments of time. Ask a winner what his life will look like in 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, and there’s a good chance that he will have a clearly defined answer.
Something you can do today is to begin designing your idea of what a more successful life will look like. Write it down in as much detail as you can. Describe everything from where you live, what kind of car you drive, who you spend time with, and how much money you have and earn.
Do this for 10 years from now, and again for 5 years from now. Keep in mind that these descriptions are flexible and can be changed at any time to better suit your idea of the life you want.
Be bold, but also be realistic. For example – amassing a $100,000,000 fortune in 10 years will require a lot more work than a net worth of $5 million would.
- COMMITMENT TO THE PLAN – Winners don’t stop working until the work is completed. They never leave things half finished. They say what they mean and then they do the work required to follow through and make their words into reality. They are not easily discouraged. They are not easily distracted. They work diligently because they understand that completed work gets them paid, nothing else does.
Commitment isn’t an easy habit to develop, but it’s one of the most valuable. Following through is something that most rat racers seem to have a problem with.
They all seem to know what they should be doing, (eating healthier, getting education, reading more). But, if you ask again sometime later, they either have never started or have abandoned it for whatever the newest latest thing is. Either way, it’s a failure to commit.
The best way that I know to develop this habit is to just choose one thing and work on it until its completion. It seems simple enough, but saying it and doing it are two very different things.
- PATIENCE and PERSISTENCE – Winners are patient and persistent people. Sometimes they do act with a sense of urgency. But, they understand that good things come to those who wait, who work consistently to completion.
They know that delayed rewards usually far outweigh instant gratification.
They recognize that ultimately they will have everything they want and live life on their own terms. To them it’s worth the wait.
Blue Collars and 9 to 5’ers struggle with patience.
Just listen to the honking horns on the freeway. Look at the lines for the drive-through for fast food and quick serve coffee. Watch them tap their foot in anticipation as they warm something in the microwave. They can’t even wait 2 minutes for their lunch to warm, usually pulling it from the oven with time still left on the timer.
And it goes much deeper.
If a winner wants to purchase the latest gadget they will either wait until they can pay cash or at the very least wait until the price comes down enough to justify the purchase. The average person whips out the credit card and buys it no matter what the cost and even pays additional interest. They simply cannot wait. They must have it now.
They behave like spoiled children, ready to throw a temper tantrum if they don’t get what they want NOW. It’s pathetic.
There are some basic adjustments that are required to develop patience. In short they are: understanding the true nature of discomfort, ability to calm the mind, ability to recognize and control emotional state, ability to analyze situations, and breaking from impulsive reactions.
As difficult as it is to cultivate, patience is one of the most necessary mindset components for success. Those who do not possess this trait haphazardly bounce from one opportunity to the next without ever sticking around long enough to collect the payoff.
Their lives are a mish-mash of missed opportunities.
Practice developing patience, it will serve you very, very well.
- BELIEF – The successful among us possess an unshakeable faith.
They believe in themselves and their abilities.
They have confidence that they can overcome any obstacles that stand between them and their goal.
They work assiduously because they are absolutely certain of the payoff they will receive upon its completion.
They have faith in whatever undertaking they involve themselves.
They simply know that things will work out as long as they do the work.
Belief, self-confidence, poise, trust, faith, call it what you want; if you want success you had better develop these traits. If you don’t believe that what you are doing will eventually pay off, you will be easily distracted and eventually quit. If you don’t have the confidence that you can overcome obstacles, then you will be easily deterred.
If you don’t belief that you are a winner, you never will become one.
The only true way to develop confidence and belief is by having success. The only way to have success is to actually try doing something.
Allow yourself to feel good about that fact. Take some more action. Monitor your results. Adjust and repeat until you have achieved the desired outcome.
There you go, now you have developed some confidence.
In summary, you should be working just as hard on developing the above traits as you are on your business itself. The two are intertwined. Working on your traits helps you to build your business. Working on your business helps to develop your traits.
Who you become is just as important as what you do.
FUNDAMENTALS OF HOW TO ESCAPE THE RAT RACE
These are the basic tenets of escapism. Some of this is uncomfortable, (remember the part about discomfort?).
Some of it might seem unrealistic.
Some of it will be beyond what you are willing to do. That’s because, as mentioned above, there are gates that protect the upper realms of success from being infiltrated by the unworthy.
Nobody is simply allowed access to the upper tier rewards in life.
ONE MUST PROVE HIS WORTH.
- The first fundamental is to get to work developing alternate streams of income. Choose a business and get to work. Don’t wait until tomorrow, or next week, or next year. Do it now!
- While you are working on that, you should be implementing the second fundamental. Work on reducing your costs, (cable TV, phone service, take-out food, etc.) Lowering your overhead will give you more operating capital and reduce a lot of unnecessary stress.
- With the additional capital you now have you can either pay down high interest debt, or use it to fund a rapid growth spurts in your business through outsourcing. In the early days I would recommend paying down some of your debt first.
Once you have a firmer understanding of how your particular business model works then you can begin to apply additional funds toward growing it and freeing up some of your time through outsourcing.
- When the debt has been eradicated and most of your tedious tasks are outsourced you can implement the final fundamentals. You should now begin developing additional revenue streams while simultaneously investing a larger portion of your income. Your net worth multiplies rapidly once you put your money to work for you earning income.
When you reach this stage you are most likely ready to quit your “real” job and begin enjoying the true entrepreneurial lifestyle.
Congratulations! Now that wasn’t so difficult, was it?
Ok, so maybe it was difficult, but that’s kind of the point. If escaping the blue-collar prison was easy then nobody would ever work. As you have read escape requires diligent effort, unshakeable confidence, and a willingness to do some things that may seem uncomfortable.
But those who have earned their freedom will tell you with 100% certitude, IT IS WORTH IT!
NOW GET TO WORK!
