How to Tame Your Fears like Alexander
Learning how to tame your fears is a high return skill that every new entrepreneur should master.
So what does Alexander the Great have to do with entrepreneurship and online business?
More than you might think.
Alexander set out to conquer his rivals, acquire their land, and expand his kingdom. You, as an entrepreneur, must conquer your competition, acquire new readers and customers, and expand your online empire.
One of the biggest obstacles that new entrepreneurs have to overcome is fear.
You might have one or several specific types of fear that are holding you back from the success that you crave. Until you learn how to overcome your fears you will be consigned to join the multitudes of unsuccessful online wannabes.
So how did Alexander deal with fear?
The story goes like this: A mighty stallion was brought to Macedonia to be presented to Alexander’s father, King Philip of Macedon. The horse stood taller and was much stronger than any other horse in Philip’s kingdom.
But, there was a problem. None of the king’s horse trainers could mount the steed.
Whenever one of them approached, the horse would kick and jump and fly into a rage.
All of the stable hands were afraid to go near this horse.
Young prince Alexander, spotting something peculiar, rose up and stated to all that he could train the horse. His father, and many in attendance, laughed at the brash young prince.
But, Alexander did not falter. Instead, he reacted with even more boldness. He said that he could indeed mount this horse, and added that if he couldn’t he would pay the entire price, 3x the cost of a normal horse, himself.
Philip allowed his son to try, expecting to teach Alexander a lesson about being arrogant.
What he didn’t know was that clever young Alexander had noticed that the horse wasn’t becoming agitated by the trainers, but by the size of his own shadow.
Alexander calmly approached the horse, turned him so he was facing the sun, thus putting the horse’s shadow behind him where he wouldn’t see it.
He then climbed up and grabbed the reins and began to ride the horse.
Alexander would end up keeping this horse, who he named Bucephalus, for his whole life. He never allowed anybody else to ride Bucephalus, and together they led cavalry charges in some of the most decisive victories in all of military history.
This story illustrates some very important concepts about fear.
As an online entrepreneur, you need to ask yourself…
What is fear?
It doesn’t matter what type of fear you’re dealing with overcoming as an entrepreneur.
- FEAR OF FAILURE
- FEAR OF SUCCESS
- FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
- FEAR OF LEADERSHIP
- FEAR OF LOOKING FOOLISH
Whatever the flavor of fear, it is usually made of the same base ingredients.
According to Wikipedia: Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat.
PERCEIVED DANGER OR THREAT – Whatever the cause of your fear, failure, success, etc., it is most likely your perception of the thing that is causing the fear.
In the same way the Bucephalus viewed his shadow as a threat, you view innocuous things as dangerous.
Here’s a system you can use to tame your fear.
How to use Your BRASS to tame your fear
B – Brashness
R – Realize
A – Act
S – Slowly
S – Succeed
I’m usually not all that impressed with helpful acronyms, but I like this one. Mostly because I made it up.
Let’s go through the letters one by one in relation to Alexander’s story.
B is for Brashness
Alexander puffed out his chest and stated with all the confidence that he could muster that he and he alone could conquer the uncontrollable Bucephalus.
When you begin to feel fear take a moment to gather your courage. Take a moment to suck in every molecule of oxygen you can possibly gather.
Hold it for 3 seconds, then blow it out as if you were Godzilla unleashing a devastating atomic breath attack on the puny Japanese Military.
That’s right my friend, you are fucking GODZILLA.
And nothing scares you.
R is for Realize
One of the more important steps to tame your fear is to realize that fear is a shadow.
It’s usually an excuse masquerading as the boogeyman. Alexander was the only one to realize the true cause of the horse’s wild behavior.
Most of the time what we perceive as being dangerous turns out to be something else entirely.
What seems like fear of success is nothing more than an excuse to quit.
What seems like fear of failure is nothing more than a way to rationalize not trying.
Make sure you realize what your fear actually is.
Identify the true nature of the fear and watch it scurry away like the vermin it is.
A is for Act.
You’ve heard the phrase “paralyzing fear”.
If fear is paralyzing, then it’s antidote is action.
Alexander knew this. He confidently strode up to Bucephalus and calmly turned him to face the sun.
His commitment to action made any trepidation he may have felt evaporate.
When you commit to acting you will see much of your fear disappear instantly.
Try it and watch.
S is for Slowly
Notice that Alexander did not run up to the wild horse. Instead he strode. When you are first facing a new fear it’s best to take things slowly.
Doing something for the first time can be terrifying, and challenging.
Go slow, remain calm, but be sure to act, because…
S is for Succeed
The bottom line is that Alexander took action. And action is the only thing that breeds success.
No amount of theorizing, hoping, wishing, praying, or vibrating at a certain frequency will make you successful.
You must take action.
It’s the only thing that matters.
Are You a Stable Hand or a Conqueror?
There are a lot of wannabes on the internet. They hang out in chat rooms and forums typing about marketing theory and search engine optimization.
But they build nothing.
They do not act.
They will never rise above mediocrity.
They are Stable Hands.
Then there are entrepreneurs who actually spend their time working on their businesses. They research and write and create and market. These entrepreneurs try things, fail, and try again.
They are the ones who have websites that stuff their bank accounts with cash.
They are the ones who one day get the opportunity to tell their boss to go piss off.
It is these type of online entrepreneurs, the true blue collar escapists, who realize their dream of commanding their own army of money making businesses. They use their forces to catapult themselves from the ranks of the common man to the realm of self-sufficient free man.
They are the true Conquerors.
Which will you be?
Will you let fear paralyze you, or will you show the world your balls of B-R-A-S-S?
You can show it right now by standing up and taking some action.
