Are you looking to stoke your passion?
You’ve probably read dozens of webpages offering cookie-cutter advice and exercises.
You might think that following these suggestions will instill you with enough piss and vinegar to conquer the world.
You would be wrong.
The conventional wisdom states that once you find your passion then all of the doors to success will magically open before you. Your business will skyrocket and you will effortlessly enter the realm of ultra-success.
Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
Bullshit usually does.
I find it quite telling that nobody who preaches this pie-in-the-sky crap can ever seem to explain just what magical force it is that will enter your life and provide with these super-human powers of effortless success.
That’s because it doesn’t exist.
It’s a fantasy.
It’s garbage content thrown up on garbage blogs to give their readers something to do because they don’t have any real answers.
I would bet that blogs that post this kind of bullshit have ad-sense ads or other ad networks all over their sidebar. Maybe they have ads interwoven in the content itself. Hey, why not, it’s not like they respect their visitors.
And, I’ll bet dollars to dimes that they have annoying popups begging you for your email address or urging you to buy their crappy product.
Just how much disrespect are they going to show you in one visit?
THE TRUTH ABOUT PASSION AND SUCCESS
Yeah, yeah, we’d all like to have a job that makes us feel fulfilled and happy. If you can find something you’re passionate about you’ll never work a day in your life.
Again, it sounds nice, right.
The truth is a little different though.
Here in the big-boy world of business nobody gives a shit whether you are passionate about your craft or not. They only care about one thing, results.
That’s all that really matters in the business world. Can you consistently provide things of value? Can you add to people’s lives? Can you solve a problem for somebody?
Where’s the passion in that?
I’ll tell you.
It lies inside the success. That’s right. If you want to be driven to succeed, then get passionate about success itself.
Nothing makes me feel more energized and alert than working on a project that will expand my business and get me one step closer to freedom from wage-slavery.
I am not passionate about helping people, that is a side effect of my passion. The money is also a side effect. So is the satisfaction of being useful and providing value to the world.
It’s all secondary to the primary motivation.
I am dammed passionate about obtaining and maintaining my financial freedom.
The desire to own my life and be the master of my own destiny burns white hot in me.
Or, more accurately, the desire to not be subordinate to anybody does. THAT, to me, is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!
That is the thing that gets me up early so I can squeeze in a couple of extra hours of work on my business. That is what motivates me to shut the TV off, sit at the computer and research, write, and create things that will pay off later on down the line.
It is the idea belief that someday, soon, I will be absolutely free.
I will have successfully escaped my blue collar prison.
I will not be a fugitive at large.
I will be LIVING LARGE. And I won’t give a damn what anybody thinks of it.
That dream, that goal, that desire to escape an unacceptable truth in my life is the very substance that fuels my passion.
HOW TO REALLY IGNITE YOUR PASSION
The secret to stoke your passion is simple.
It’s all about leveraging your anger.
Once your situation becomes unacceptable to you, you will work tirelessly and relentlessly to change it. It will dominate your every waking moment. It will be processed by your subconscious mind as you sleep. It will be the prime motivator for almost every decision you make until the situation is resolved to your liking.
You will become obsessed with changing things that have become unacceptable.
Here’s a quick story that illustrates what I mean.
I had always been a renter. I never really wanted to own my own place to live, even though I knew that in my situation owning made more financial sense vs. renting. But, I didn’t really care. I wasn’t really paying attention to my credit rating and was wasting a lot of money on frivolous bullshit. The truth is, I always kind of felt unworthy of ownership even though I had a steady job with decent pay.
I just settled for being a renter.
I was a good tenant, and in return I was usually treated very fairly by my landlords. Except for two times that opened my eyes and taught me two very valuable life lessons.
One – I had been renting an apartment for over 5 years. I was clean and quiet and got along well with the landlord’s son who lived upstairs. One day I found an envelope that somebody slid underneath my door. It read, “Mike, sorry about this, but my brother needs the apartment. We’ll allow you 3 months to find another place”.
I was shocked. I mean, they were always talking about how good a tenant I was. I always paid the rent in full and in advance. I was clean, quiet, and respectful. How could they be so heartless?
LESSON ONE – IF YOU ARE NOT THE OWNER, YOU CAN BE KICKED OUT.
Once I calmed down I decided that I had had enough of renting and was going to buy my own place. A couple of consultations with mortgage brokers opened my eyes to the fact that I was completely unprepared. I would have to spend some time repairing my credit first. They also made me realize that buying a home is usually a lengthy process that can stretch years.
It wasn’t going to happen in 3 months’ time.
I eventually decided to take an apartment from my lifelong friend who just happened to have a vacancy open up in his second floor apartment.
We agreed on a rent schedule that would escalate by a set increment for four years and then lock in at the fourth year rate. While it was a little more than the previous apartment It was still below market average and still a good deal.
We shook hands and I moved in.
Things went ok for the first 18 months. I paid my rent in full and in advance. I helped out with snow shoveling and bringing trash to the sidewalk. I was clean and quiet and didn’t complain about their tendency to be loud.
Then one day I get an email stating that my rent was increasing to an amount far above the agreed upon final amount. Not only that, but it was increasing immediately.
What happened to the agreed upon schedule?
What happened to the agreed upon increase amounts?
What happened to the handshake agreement we had?
I though he was my friend.
LESSON TWO – VERBAL AGREEMENTS MEAN NOTHING, NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE WITH.
This time I didn’t have to move, but boy oh boy I wanted to.
It burned me that somebody had the audacity to do this to me. It pissed me off that I was in a position where somebody could do this to me.
I felt cheated, lied to, and used.
I had once again found myself in a position where somebody had authority over me.
It sucked. And I had no one to blame but MYSELF!
I quickly became obsessed with the mission of cleaning up my credit, finding a place of my own, and purchasing my first home.
It dominated every waking moment. It influenced every single decision I made. It was all I thought about.
I ruthlessly cut spending, began working more hours, and started the long, painful task of credit repair.
In one year’s time my credit rating was good enough to qualify for a small mortgage. I found a place I could afford, bought it, and moved in.
I can tell you, those couple years of obsession were the most productive of my life. Before that, I never thought I would be able to pay off my debt.
But, spurred on by something that had become UNACCEPTABLE, I was able to tap into abilities, focus, and determination that had previously been inaccessible to me.
It wasn’t the dream of owning my own home that was driving me, it was the burning desire to free my life from the influence of this particular person.
I wasn’t moving toward something I wanted; I was moving away from something that had become unacceptable.
After that I began using anger leveraging to stoke my passion and become more focused.
HOW TO STOKE YOUR PASSION FOR BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS
The secret to finding passion is in the last sentence of the above story.
Don’t seek to move toward something. Instead, find what is unacceptable to you, and move away from that.
Of course, you should have long-term goals to keep you on track. But, goals serve only as steering mechanisms. They do not provide propulsion.
Only passion can do that. Passion to the extent of obsession. And the best way to become obsessed is to view things you want to change as being intolerable. That is the primary difference between people who settle for less and people who strive for more.
Settler – My boss is an asshole, but it is what it is. I get steady pay and some benefits, and when I’m 65 maybe I can retire and go on a cruise, you know, enjoy life.
Passionate, Driven Ass Kicker – My boss in an asshole. It’s unacceptable that I am in this position. I am going to change this, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES! I am responsible for allowing myself to get into this position, and I will be responsible for escaping it. I’m betting on myself, and I like my odds.
Hopefully you can see the fundamental difference.
The settler sees things as static. “It is what it is”, implies that there is no hope of changing anything. It is all preordained in the stars and everybody has to play their role, even if your role is that of a sheep.
He meekly accepts his fate and is only comforted by the illusion of “enjoying his retirement”.
It is, in a word, pathetic.
The Passionate, Driven Ass Kicker views this situation as unacceptable.
He vows to do everything in his power to change it. He will get up early, stay up late, read the right kinds of books, take courses to learn new skills, attend seminars, network, and build until he has escaped. He accepts responsibility for his situation, and by doing so, affirms that he also is responsible for his eventual escape.
He has hope of a more fulfilling destiny.
He is a hero.
And so should you be.
HOW TO SUMMON THE POWERS OF DRIVE AND PASSION
Most other blogs will tell you to write down your goals, review them a few times a day, create a vision board, and other woo-woo bullshit like that. If you only vibrate at the right frequency, they’ll tell you, then all your dreams will materialize.
It’s just that simple, right?
If you’ve read this far then you know that such bullshit advice is 100%…WRONG!
But, don’t worry, Uncle Mike’s going to share the secret with you.
This is how to stoke your passion.
Here’s what you do.
Get some paper and a pen. DO NOT OPEN A WORD DOCUMENT. Paper and pen only!
Go someplace where you can be alone and yell and nobody will hear you. (I’m very serious about this)
Now, concentrate on the things in your life that piss you off.
Be absolutely honest with yourself. It’s ok, nobody but you will ever see this.
It can be big things like having to be subordinate to a dick-head boss. It can be small things like the pretty girl on your street won’t give you the time of day. Whatever it is, think long and hard about it until you begin to feel anger rise.
Now, stand up, get animated, and get verbal about it. It’s of the utmost importance to summon up as much emotion, anger, rage, and bitterness as you can.
The more emotional you become during this exercise, the more powerful your passion will be.
Yell out loud what it is, for example, “It is unacceptable that my job sucks ass, I do too much work and I don’t make enough money to do anything I want, and I hate the stupid assholes I work with and for. It is unacceptable!”
Important Note: begin and end each of these rants with the phrase “It is unacceptable!”
Now, stand up tall and proud, pound your fist against your chest and yell out loud what the situation will be like. Assert yourself and shoot for the moon.
Say whatever comes to mind, no matter how much your conscience tells you that it’s not possible. If you want to fuck a different swimsuit model every night of the week, say so, if you want to be a billionaire, say so. No matter what it is, just yell it out like this:
“The way it WILL be is I will have my own business, I will be making huge bank, I will be in charge of my life and be able to choose who I work with. I will work for nobody but me! That is the way it WILL be”
Begin and end each of these assertions with the phrase “The way it WILL be!”
Now sit down and write in as much detail both of the things you just yelled out including the It is unacceptable and the way it will be parts.
Repeat this process for all of the areas of your life that are truly, honestly unacceptable.
Can you imagine how fired up you will feel by reading this document every morning when you first open your eyes?
I guarantee you that you will never hit the snooze alarm again.
You will jump out of bed breathing fire and attack your day like a Viking on a pillaging raid.
People will begin to notice a change in your demeanor. You will become more focused. You will be more driven. People will sense the passion permeating from your core.
This is very powerful stuff.
THIS IS HOW YOU STOKE YOUR PASSION.
It’s like shoveling coal into a smouldering furnace.
The embers that are already there ignite the added fuel.
You’re chugging down the track and gaining momentum by the minute.
So there you have it. The real honest truth about finding your passion and fueling your drive to action.
Go and do this exercise, keep your passion statement close to your bed, and be sure to read it (out loud and with emotion if possible) every morning upon awakening.
Trust Uncle Mike, it works wonders.
You will NEVER feel more motivated to achieve.
